Kzinssie is the first major boss you'll fight in . Once Gerard has taken a leadership position, you'll have much more freedom in choosing who to bring into battle with you during your second encounter with Kzinssie. While several of the characters you likely brought with you into your first fight will still prove helpful the second time around, it's a good idea to revise your party and switch members in or out as needed. You'll have one more spot to fill here, and either James or Aries could perform well, depending on your playstyle and preferences. Both bring effective skills to the table, with Aries offering Life Water and James inflicting considerable damage with Hard Slash and various other sword attacks.
If you're finding it hard to sustain your team, opt for Aries here. Otherwise, James makes an excellent offensive option.
With Gerard as a key player, he now has access to Leon's Light Magic. You should train in this area until he gains access to Moonlight, which will come in handy to heal up as needed during the boss fight. Ideally, you'll want to go ahead and have him learn how to use Fireball as well. This can be done by visiting the Court Mages in the castle.
