Ring has unveiled its most advanced battery-powered video doorbell yet, the Battery Doorbell Plus. It features a higher-resolution sensor and wider-angle lens than the standard battery-equipped Video Doorbell 4.
Ring's product naming scheme is a bit confusing, so for clarity, the standard Video Doorbell line is the battery-powered series. The Video Doorbell Pro line is the wired-only series. The Battery Doorbell Plus is the newest model of Video Doorbell, though it's called the Battery Doorbell Plus rather than the Video Doorbell Plus, since there are already Video Doorbell Pro devices.
The new doorbell sports a 1536p resolution through a 150-by-150-degree lens, matching the wired Video Doorbell Pro 2's video capabilities and exceeding the 1080p, 160-by-84-degree view of the Video Doorbell 4. Like the Pro 2, the Battery Doorbell Plus's expanded vertical view enables Ring's package-alert feature to detect if a package is left on the doorstep.
The Battery Doorbell Plus also features longer battery life, but not with a bigger battery. The company says that new energy-saving features enable the doorbell to last three times as long as the first Video Doorbell, but it doesn't compare the device to the more recent Video Doorbell 4.
Considering the battery-powered Video Doorbell launched in 2015, a tripled battery life since then doesn't sound particularly impressive, especially since one of our initial complaints about the 2015 version was its poor battery life. In testing that version, the batteries lasted 2.5 months, so based on comparable use, the Battery Doorbell Plus should last seven to eight months on a charge.
The Battery Doorbell Plus starts shipping April 5, and is available to preorder for $179.99.
