Qualcomm is adopting a new "naming architecture" for the next generation of its consumer and commercial PC platform.
It's called Snapdragon X, and it will be a solution for any device that wants to run Windows on ARM (think next-gen Surface Pro X). Qualcomm isn't sharing much in the way of details just yet as that's being saved for the Snapdragon Summit 2023 held on Oct. 24-26 in Hawaii.
The little we do know is that Snapdragon X will arrive as a platform in 2024 with the promise of "next-level performance, AI, connectivity, and battery life." It will combine a CPU, GPU, and neural processor (NPU) in a custom Qualcomm Oryon chip.
Qualcomm says it decided to use the Snapdragon X name as it "distinguishes our PC platforms from other Snapdragon product categories" and offers "a clear, simplified tiering structure helps users navigate our platform capabilities from mainstream to premium."
Back in 2019, the Surface Pro X classed as the thinnest and lightest Surface product yet. If Microsoft opts to refresh the device in 2024, we could see an even thinner and lighter version, but with a lot more performance available under the hood. Microsoft's branding team will have a headache, though, as the laptop will no doubt be referred to as the "Snapdragon X Surface Pro X."
