The next generation of Pokémon games, Scarlet and Violet, have been announced, and many are hoping that they'll avoid making a mistake with the starter Pokémon that the last few have. Ever since X and Y, the final evolutions have grown increasingly human-looking, as well as being themed around human occupations such as professional wrestlers. The last generation with truly monstrous Pocket Monsters was Gen 5, and after the release of Gen 9's trailer, many hope that the final evolutions of Sprigatito, Feucoco, and Quaxly will look less human than those of the starters in recent games.
The entire premise of Pokémon is that these monsters Trainers capture and train are exactly that — monsters. The starter Pokémon that players have gone on their Pokémon journeys with are always fearsome beasts, and often fan-favorites in their respective generations. Some of the Pokémon TCG cards worth the most money are the starters. However, in the past few generations, the final evolutions for the starters have been growing increasingly anthropomorphic. X and Y's starters all had humanoid body shapes, and the trend has continued in the following generations. Galar's final starter evolutions are even based on soccer players, drummers, and superspies. Some fans have had enough of the increasingly human-looking starters, so hopefully Scarlet and Violet's put the «monster» back in «Pocket Monster».
