Be sure not to believe everything you read as supposed Pokémon Scarlet & Violet secrets have begun to do the rounds.
With how little info there is on the next set of Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, it’s very easy for eager fans to take any supposedly leaked information at face value.
As such, a couple of ‘leaks’ have popped up in the wake of the games’ announcement, with one claiming to involve a new in-game screenshot. Shared on Reddit, it depicts one of the new starter pokémon, Fuecoco, battling an entirely new creature that looks like a scorpion.
It looks pretty legit, with the user interface very similar to previous games. However, most discerning fans have been quick to dismiss it given the blurry quality of the picture and the no doubt deliberate decision to take it during a sandstorm, further obscuring the models. The forum it first appeared in now lists it as fake.
A second Reddit leak, one that was apparently published before the games were announced, made a number of claims regarding new pokémon, including the evolutions of the starters and the same scorpion from the first leak.
The original post was later deleted, but some digging courtesy of other Reddit users revealed that it was a photoshop and likely made to piggyback off the screenshot leak.
There have been accurate Pokémon leaks in the past, with both Pokémon Sword & Shield and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. In those instances, the leaks occurred much closer to their respective releases, through people leaking elements from the official strategy guide and early review copies (for which they were severely punished by Nintendo).
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet isn’t due to release until late 2022, so it’s far too early for any accurate information to be leaked online
