The National Dex controversy is doomed to start again with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, according to the announcement’s fine print.
There is a lot of excitement surrounding the next set of Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet & Violet. The brief reveal trailer showed a vast open world similar to Pokémon Legends and the three new starters are already proving popular with fans (well, maybe not the duck).
However, don’t be surprised if the complaints that surrounded Pokémon Sword & Shield make a comeback, because there’s already proof that the new games will, once again, feature an incomplete pokédex.
The new games are confirmed to be compatible with Pokémon Home, meaning players can transfer their favourite ‘mons from some of the previous games to Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.
Just as you couldn’t transfer certain pokémon into Pokémon Sword & Shield, the announcement’s fine print suggests this will exactly be the case with Pokémon Scarlet & Violet.
‘Each game that can receive pokémon via Pokémon Home can receive only pokémon that can be obtained in that particular game. To find out what pokémon appear in Pokémon Scarlet & Pokémon Violet, please look forward to the release of those games,’ it reads.
Honestly, this was always going to be the case despite the backlash to Pokémon Sword & Shield’s culling of the pokédex, as there are simply too many of the creatures now (900+ as of Pokémon Legends: Arceus).
Developer Game Freak justified its decision to cut some of them from the last game by explaining that it was near impossible to create and animate new models for every available pokémon. Plus it’d be extremely difficult to maintain game balance both for casual play and the competitive scene.
