PlayStation has moved on from the era of releasing different designs of the same console in its PS5 era, instead opting for covers that can be removed and replaced, allowing you to alter your console's appearance. The base model of PlayStation's latest console has a number of official cover options three years in - including the hard-to-find Spider-Man 2 cover - and now the newer, slimmer model is getting some color alternatives of its own.
Shown off for the first time at Sony CES this week, the first images of the slimmer PS5's covers were shared by Notebook Check (thanks, VGC). Apparently no special attention was drawn to the new covers. They were just on display for attendees to discover and admire, and then share the news with the rest of the world, which is exactly what has happened.
That means no release date nor price point has been revealed for the slimmer PS5's covers. However, PlayStation did promise the new model would be getting covers of its own in early 2024, and their appearance at Sony CES aligns with that. It was also noted last year that the slimmer console's cover options will start at $54.99. If that's how much its own Deep Earth options cost, then that will be slightly cheaper than the regular PS5 alternatives which you can still pre-order for $59.99.
The three colors shown off at Sony CES are the same three included in the base model's Deep Earth collection- Sterling Silver, Cobalt Blue, and Volcanic Red. The only official covers released so far that have a shiny finish rather than a matte one. The only consoles on display at Sony CES with the upcoming covers on them were disc versions of the newer PS5, but it's probably safe to assume the digital version of the console will be getting the covers
