While Succession star Brian Cox turned down a role in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, this may be because the actor was offered the wrong part in the franchise. Recently, veteran screen star Brian Cox courted controversy when the actor admitted he turned down a role in the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Cox went on to say he didn’t regret the decision, as he found star Johnny Depp’s work as Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series overrated.
While Cox’s comments proved pretty divisive among many fans of the franchise, it is hard to deny that the actor was right to turn down the part he was offered. Not only was the Pirates of the Caribbean role that Cox was offered a fairly minor one, it was also not one that fit his well-established persona. Cox has often played stern, stoic characters, and was offered the part of a weak-willed and out-of-touch patriarch in the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

The actor turned down the role of Elizabeth’s father, Governor Swann, with Cox calling it a “thankless” part. However, his gruff screen persona would have made Cox a far better fit for Captain Barbossa or Davy Jones, both of which ended up being more pivotal to the franchise as a whole. While Bill Nighy’s Davy Jones ended up being arguably the most iconic villain in the series, Captain Barbossa transitioned from being the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie’s antagonist into being the most reliable supporting star in the series in later sequels. Cox would have been better suited to either of these roles than he was to Governor Swann, and may have improved the movies had he been offered the part.
