For a limited time, you can pick up the eerie adventure The Whisperer over on GOG, absolutely free.
The Whisperer is a point-and-click adventure game about exploring an abandoned trading post in Lower Canada, way back in 1814. The mood is ice-cold and gloomy, an isolated winter environment. You play as Robert of the North West trading company, who must investigate the vanishing of its trading post's two winterers. Horrors await.
Like its inspirations, Scratches and The Dark Eye, The Whisperer involves solving puzzles, discovering locations, and managing inventory, all from a first-person perspective. Over the game's roughly 45-minute run time, you explore the mystery at the game's heart and discover as-yet-unknown terrors.
The Whisperer works as its own story, but it is also a prelude to another point-and-click horror game from the same development team: the Whispering Valley. This sequel takes place just over 70 years later in 1886 and similarly concerns the exploration of an abandoned village. So if this brief sampling doesn't whet your appetite, you can check out the follow-up.
In other PC gaming deals, Epic Games posted its free game for this week and Humble Bundle put up a collection of seven cyberpunk games for $15.
