Mara Jade, the adopted daughter of Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars Legends continuity, was subjected to a horrifying version of the iconic Jedi mind trick but managed to resist its influence for a time. Mara Jade was raised by Palpatine and trained by him as an unofficial Sith, becoming an Emperor’s Hand and serving as her adopted father’s assassin. Palpatine is one of the most intelligent beings in the Star Wars galaxy, and he may have trained Mara Jade as a tactician as well, considering her clever method of removing her father’s influence from her mind.
Although Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader were the most powerful dark side users in the original Star Wars trilogy era, the Empire had many powerful runners-up within its ranks. The ambitious Inquisitor (and former Jedi) Jerec sought to kill and replace Darth Vader as the lesser Sith Lord, while Vader’s pupil Shira Brie eventually became the Dark Lady of the Sith Lumiya (and the only worthy successor to Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine). Mara Jade, similarly, was once an exceptional dark side practitioner (and Sith in all but name) who shared a psychic bond with The Emperor, who used it for a horrifying purpose towards the end of the Battle of Endor.

As revealed in the comic adaptation of the famous Legends-era Thrawn Trilogy, Palpatine used his connection to Mara Jade to give her a subconscious command to kill Luke Skywalker as he fell to his (first death) aboard the Second Death Star.
