Sometimes it’s hard to put down something that is beloved by the fandom, and, in the case of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, that adage has proven strong enough to bring a world back from the dead. Though they had quite definitively spelled the end of the those meddlesome turtle brothers and the vast majority of their allies as well, Kevin Eastman has announced a new series, TMNT: The Last Ronin – The Lost Years, to continue the brutal tale of a world beset by death and madness. Let the games begin anew.
Though the original series spanned only 5 issues, published across nearly two years by IDW, TMNT: The Last Ronin proved to be a bold and enduring vision of the storied heroes on a half shell. Reuniting the original creative team behind the pop culture phenomenon, Eastman and Peter Laird, The Last Ronin weaved a dark tapestry of a possible future for the turtles where only Michelangelo survived to battle against totalitarian rule under the Foot Clan. A notably harrowing ride, with Michelangelo suffering from survivors’ guilt and possibly delusional phantasms of his now-deceased brothers, the series received critical acclaim for its uncompromising approach, mature themes and remarkable action-sequencing.

So it only made sense that, on Saturday, July 23, Eastman announced a new series on a panel at San Diego Comic-Con; a 5-issue series set in the world of The Last Ronin, entitled The Lost Years, to be written by Eastman and Tom Waltz and drawn by Eastman with Ben Bishop and S.L. Gallant. This expansion, mostly acting as a prequel to the main story told in the first series, will also feature tales from the timeline during the original adventures
