After their brutal introduction in the new film, co-producer Richie Palmer opens up about the Illuminati's Marvel Cinematic Universe future following Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. First established by Brian Michael Bendis in the comics, the Illuminati are a secretive group of superheroes formed on the heels of the Kree-Skrull war, with Tony Stark realizing the members of the team could have prevented the war with their combined knowledge of the alien races. Unlike similar superhero teams such as the Avengers or the X-Men, the group generally only meets to exchange information in the hopes of preventing further catastrophes.
The Illuminati were introduced in the MCU with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Benedict Cumberbatch's titular sorcerer traveled to Earth-838 while saving America Chavez from the Scarlet Witch. The group in the film were comprised of Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier, a different version from Fox's X-Men film franchise, Lashana Lynch's Captain Marvel. Hayley Atwell's Captain Carter, Chiwetel Ejiofor's Karl Mordo, Anson Mount's Black Bolt and John Krasinski's Reed Richards. The MCU sequel memorably saw the group wiped out by Scarlet Witch as she dreamwalked in the hopes of capturing America, but the franchise may not yet be done with the Illuminati.
