There is controversy surrounding the age gap between actors and on-screen lovers Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy. Compounded by the fact that there are nude and sex scenes, some movie fans say that the age gap is too wide.
The 20-year age gap between Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh is double that of the real-life Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock.
While the Oppenheimer movie is clearly supposed to ground itself in realism as it recounts the story of a man who developed one of the most dangerous weapons on Earth, some liberties have been taken when it comes to the age of the cast and who they portray.
The age gap has sparked discussion across social media, with one side saying that the age gap is too big. @ginagemeni on Twitter had the following to say:
Others argue that it’s hardly the most controversial thing about the movie given that it’s exploring Oppenheimer’s development of the devastating atomic bomb:
Unfollowing Oppenheimer now. Was a big fan of his bomb making, didn’t know about the age gap stuff
Adding fuel to the controversy surrounding the 20-year age gap between the actors is the “prolonged full nudity” for both Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy during sex scenes.
The nudity is one of the factors that led to the Oppenheimer age rating being “R” in the US. This is the first R-rated Christopher Nolan movie in 20 years, ever since Insomnia came out in 2002.
At the time of writing, neither actor has commented on the age gap, nor has director Christopher Nolan acknowledged the controversy.
