BARCELONA—Folding phones are one of more exciting segments in the smartphone space. Flexible OLED displays and incredible feats of engineering have allowed phone makers to create devices that bend their screens in half. In recent months, Honor and Oppo have pushed out second-generation foldables, while Samsung is already on its fourth wave of bendy handsets. Later this year, OnePlus plans to jump into the game.
"Our first foldable phone will have the signature OnePlus fast and smooth experience," said Kinder Liu, President and COO of OnePlus, speaking at Mobile World Congress.
OnePlus shares booth space at the trade show with its BBK stablemate Oppo. Oppo's latest foldable, the Find N2 Flip, is a pocketable device that's similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 4. In late 2021, Oppo debuted a folding device closer in appearance to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. OnePlus will be able to draw on the engineering and development of both these devices as it crafts its own.
"It must be a flagship phone that doesn't settle because of its folding form, in terms of industrial design, mechanical technology, and other aspects," continues Liu. "We want to launch a device that aims to be at the pinnacle experience of today’s foldable market.”
The slogan "never settle" plays a central role in OnePlus' philosophy of creating devices that surprise and delight users. The company always aims to make phones that are fast in terms of performance and smooth in their experience. Its latest phone, the OnePlus 11 5G, is a winner for the company and embodies that ideal. We can only hope that the company is as successful in its endeavor to bring a foldable to market.
