One of the largest reasons for the film’s success is due to the number of returning Spider-Man characters that appear throughout the narrative. The trailers announced the return of many famous Spider-Man villains, including Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin. In addition, the mass of rumors around Spider-Man variants appearing in the film was confirmed when Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire each returned as Peter Parker despite long denying their involvement.
