While Microsoft and Sony are buying up studios left and right to expand Xbox and PlayStation, Nintendo isn't interested. Acquisitions aren't out of the question, but it isn't seeking to compete with the other two console publishers.
"Our brand was built upon products crafted with dedication by our employees, and having a large number of people who don't possess Nintendo DNA in our group would not be a plus to the company," Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa stated.

It isn't too surprising considering that Nintendo doesn't even own Game Freak, the developer behind Pokemon. However, it does have the controlling share of the Pokemon Company and the rights to Pokemon's IP. If acquisitions were to happen, it's likely they would be done in-house with studios Nintendo has worked closely with, not unlike Sony's strategy evident by its purchasing of Bluepoint, Insomniac, and Naughty Dog. But it did branch out similarly to Microsoft with its recent Bungie acquisition.
As much can be seen with Nintendo's recent acquisition of Luigi's Mansion 3 developer Next Level Games, pointing again to what its future approach to acquisitions will look like. It's not in the habit of purchasing bigger studios like Bethesda with its own library of beloved IPs or colossal publishers such as Activision Blizzard.
But Furukawa did talk about Nintendo's future, particularly in regard to the Switch. He stressed that it's only in the middle of its lifecycle due to how well it's performing, meaning we won't see a new Nintendo console for some time now.
