It has been four years since the last 2D Mario game, but Nintendo is finally breaking that hiatus with Super Mario Bros. Wonder, launching later this year on October 20.
The Switch has a Mario Bros. already, but it's a re-release of the Wii U game, so this marks the first true Switch Super Mario Bros. on the platform. Perfect way to cap it off before a successor console, eh? Nudge nudge Nintendo.

The trailer shows a completely revamped aesthetic, breaking away from the 'NEW' approach that we've seen in the more modern games. We see a small scrunched Mario, a new flower power-up that distorts reality and causes pipes to become flexible worm-like creatures, giant tall Mario (and Goombas), a rolling spike ball Mario, a charge of bulls that destroy the finishing flag, a new collectable called the 'Wonder Seed', Luigi, Peach, Toad, Daisy, and, of course, rideable Yoshi.
What has people really excited about the trailer is the final reveal - a power-up that turns Mario into an elephant. He even keeps the signature red top, dungarees, and hat. Nintendo of America's senior vice president of creative and planning quickly took to Twitter to crack a pun about the reveal, saying, "Happy I can finally talk about the elephant (Mario) in the room", and he's not the only one since it has quickly become a celebrated icon.
One Twitter user, @Sammydogge, has already shared fan art of the design, having the new elephant Mario suggestively wink at the camera. That was alarmingly fast--I think Sammy might be a new Nintendo insider.
