Super Mario Bros. Wonder has an aesthetic of something old, something new, bringing the style of the classic Mario game manuals into 3D alongside radical redesigns that see characters more closely resemble their 2D counterparts. It's a welcome change, but it goes deeper than that, as fans have noticed a couple of references to an old tie-in anime movie called Peach-hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! (or Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach).
Released in 1986, this Super Mario Bros. tie-in told the story of... drumroll please; Princess Peach getting kidnapped. Daring today, aren't we? Mario and Luigi embark on a quest to rescue her in classic Mario Bros. fashion, but it ends by introducing an all-new character, Haru. Throughout the movie, he takes the role of a dog called Kibidango, but once Peach's necklace is returned, he reverts back to his proper form, revealing that he is the prince of the Flower Kingdom. It turns out that Bowser had turned him into a dog to marry Peach in his place, and with the revelation that this dog was her fiance all along, Mario leaves heartbroken.

As spotted by Reddit user Basic_Passion_7415, Super Mario Bros. Wonder briefly showed Luigi standing next to a level in the overworld with the caption, "Welcome to the Flower Kingdom!" There's also a green creature of some kind latching onto Luigi's back, which OP thinks is Kibidango. They're green instead of blue and have stubbier legs, but there is something of a resemblance. Maybe we'll see Haru return, finally bringing the anime tie-in's story to Mario games 37 years later.
