Mortal Kombat 1 is NetherRealm's biggest undertaking yet, taking up more development time than any other previous game in the series. This is according to Ed Boon, who just shared some more details on the game over on the NetherRealm Twitch channel.
In the livestream, Boon said that this long development period will "show" in the final product - the first to leave the PS4 and Xbox One behind. This is despite Mortal Kombat 1 sticking to the same four-year gap between sequels that we've come to expect in recent years, suggesting there may have been some overlap between this and Mortal Kombat 11's development, not just its ongoing support.

"We've been working on this game... I think longer than any Mortal Kombat game, and it's going to show," says Boon. "You're going to be excited to see the stuff that we can't wait to tell you about."
The livestream didn't give away much more than that, but it did confirm some features that had been rumoured for the next Mortal Kombat game. Perhaps most excitingly, new game modes have been confirmed, although we don't know what these will be. Ed Boon has frequently teased a return of Konquest mode, something that has been criminally absent from the series for years now. It's safe to say that NetherRealm knows how much fans want this, so it's possible that it will be confirmed closer to the launch.
On top of that, we're getting new gameplay mechanics. It's possible that this was in reference to the already-announced Kameo fighter system, which will see a selection of characters support the main roster during fights.
