Bethesda’s huge open galaxy RPG Starfield will be coming out on 6th September across Xbox Series X|S and PC, but what will the performance be like on consoles? That’s a question that game director Todd Howard was posed following the deep dive presentation on Sunday.
Bethesda are sticking with 30fps on Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, though this will let them push 4K and 1440p respectively – pretty impressive on the lower-powered console! Sadly for 60fps advocates, it doesn’t look like this will be an option, even on Xbox Series X.
Speaking to IGN, Howard said, “I think it will come as no surprise, given our previous games, that we go for always these huge open worlds [that are] fully dynamic, hyper-detailed where anything can happen, and we do want to do that, you know.
“It’s 4K on the [Series] X, 1440p on the [Series] S, we do lock it at 30, because we want all that fidelity, we want all that stuff, we don’t want to sacrifice anything.”
Howard continued, “Fortunately for this one we’ve got it running great. It’s often running way above that, sometimes at 60, but on the consoles we do lock it because we prefer the consistency. We are not even thinking about it and we don’t ever want to sacrifice that experience that makes our games really, really special.
“It feels great, we’re really happy with how it feels even in the heat of battle – we need that headroom because, you know, in our games really anything can happen.”
It shouldn’t really be much of a surprise that a game like Starfield is targeting 30fps, given its scale and scope. The big Starfield Direct reveal stream delved into the vast nature of this game with over 1000 worlds, deep customisation options, epic stories, both ground and space travel, and so much more.
