The newest installment in the Resident Evil franchise has just hit the streaming platform, featuring brand new characters and familiar faces alike.Resident Evil is the second television adaptation and the ninth live-action adaptation to follow the original video game series. Though the Netflix series exists within an original universe, Resident Evil borrows canon lore, characters, and backstory from the video games, ranging from the first Resident Evil game in 1996 to 2021's Resident Evil Village.
Netflix's Resident Evil follows two timelines; one in 2022 and one in 2036. The 2022 timeline follows two 14-year-old twin sisters, Jade and Billie Wesker, as they move to New Raccoon City for their father's new position in the Umbrella Corporation. There, the sisters uncover far more than they ever expected about their father and the company that employs him. At the same time, the T-virus — a virus that causes people to mutate into flesh-eating zombies called Zeroes — has begun to run rampant in Mexico. Conversely, in the 2036 timeline, the world is struggling to survive as the T-virus has caused a global apocalypse, dwindling the human population down to 300 million — and outside of the walled settlements that hold what is left of humanity, six billion Zeroes roam the planet.
