Waymo is expanding its autonomous taxi service across Phoenix and San Francisco.
In Arizona, passengers in Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Mesa can now catch a lift in one of Waymo's self-driving taxis.
"With this expansion, we now serve 180 square miles of The Valley—the largest fully autonomous service area in the world," Waymo says(Opens in a new window), or nearly four times the size of Waymo One's operations when it opened to the public in 2020.
In San Francisco, Waymo is giving access to more "Trusted Testers." Having onboarded thousands of locals since its November debut in The Golden City, with tens of thousands more on a waitlist, Waymo is awaiting its final permit to provide a paid service in the city.
"Waymo One remains the only and largest 24/7 fully autonomous ride-hailing service in the world—serving thousands of rides in multiple key markets—and we're scaling quickly," says Chief Product Officer Saswat Panigrahi. "These latest expansions in Metro Phoenix and San Francisco will help us provide more trips to more riders in more places, and are a big step forward on the road to growing our business."
Waymo's One platform launched in late 2018, offering self-driving trips to select riders in the Phoenix metro area. It recently swapped hybrid vans for an all-electric fleet.
