Last year, NCSoft began unveiling a slate of codenamed projects that they were working on (one being later revealed as Throne and Liberty)and would begin announcing over time. One of those is Project M, which got its own presentation at GDC this week, plus some new details involving AI tools.
The GDC showcase was about introducing the game a bit more, sure, but it was also largely about introducing the technology in use, including some brand new uses of Unreal Engine 5. The presentation was made as part of Epic Games’ State of Unreal opening session at the show.
Project M gets a three-minute trailer with an introduction by a digital version of the company's Chief Creative Officer, Taekjin Kim, in order to introduce what Kim calls NCSoft’s “most ambitious project to date”. This came along with both some snippets of a more traditional trailer style peek at the game, along with technological questions that shape Project M.
AI-based tech is hot right now, with conversations being had all over, and the digital version of Kim, as well as the voice used, were developed with the use of AI-based facial animation tech and text to speech synthesis. Voices can be changed to be more like a real person's own voice, adjusted for language, accent, and emotion. You can judge for yourself how the narration sounds, especially when expressing different tones or emphasizing something.
