Warning: spoilers ahead for My Hero Academia chapter 350!
All For One might have been able to manipulate and control numerous broken children to serve as his vessels, including Shigaraki Tomura, but the latest chapter of My Hero Academia reveals that he tried and failed to do the same with Dabi — and for an incredible reason.
Dabi was grievously injured in a desperate attempt to capture the attention of his father, the hero known as Endeavor. Dabi's obsession with Endeavor is, like his fire-based quirk, all-consuming — born from his belief that he was cast aside in favor of Shoto. This obsessive rage has turned Dabi into a major threat in My Hero Academia, but apparently it also made him immune to All For One's otherwise masterful manipulations.

As Dabi tells Shoto the truth in chapter 350 about what happened to him after he burned alive, Dr. Daruma Ujiko explains in the present day about why he considered Dabi to be a failed experiment. Apparently, All For One raised many other children just in case something happened to his main vessel Shigaraki, and he needed a new child to serve as his replacement. Dabi was one of the contenders. Based on Dr. Ujiko's description of the former Toya Todoroki, Dabi could have been a perfect vessel, possibly even more so than Shigaraki. However, Dabi ended up being labeled as a failed experiment because he hated and wanted revenge on his father Endeavor too much.
