The dark side of the Force in Star Wars has long been the source of some surprising powers, including a Sith technique which — if it hadn't been retconned out of canon — would have effectively made Darth Maul immortal, as well as totally transforming Palpatine's story.
Star Wars Tales is a comic anthology series of short stories from the early 2000s. Including some ambitious narratives, the series' earlier issues were later declared non-canon, even before the Extended Universe was rebranded as Star Wars Legends following Disney's acquisition of the franchise. While this stories didn't get to influence lore for long due to their excluded status, they did manage to tell tales fans couldn't find anywhere else, such as the epic battle between Darth Vader and Darth Maul.

This clash happens in Star Wars Tales #9's 'Resurrection,' from Ron Marz and Rick Leonardi. At this point in Star Wars lore, Darth Maul is still dead canonically, so to see him come back to fight Darth Vader was a treat for fans. Maul was brought back by secret Sith adherents using a dark power that relied on the dead's hatred in life, something that Maul had an abundance of. Although Darth Vader wins the fight, Maul makes it clear that he is one of the most hateful beings to ever live. Since the Sith's power seems to have restored Maul in mind and body, this opens the door to Maul being resurrected in future by anyone who needs a powerful Sith soldier, especially since — following Vader's redemption — he'd be the most able Sith warrior this power could be used to bring back.
