MSI has begun investigating the issue of the burnt X870 motherboard & the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, saying it will independently find out the root cause.
The recent incident of a damaged/burnt AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D took the PC builder community by storm. Thankfully, it is not a widespread issue like the melting of the 12VHPWR connector on RTX 4090, but several techies and now PC hardware manufacturers have started looking into the issue in detail.
If you remember our previous report, we presented the case of a Redditor who posted pics of his burned X870 motherboard socket and a similarly burned AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor. According to the majority of the reports, this resulted from a human error, and it wasn't the processor or the motherboard's faulty design.
However, as the motherboard in this scenario was MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk Wi-Fi, MSI has started delving into the issue on its own. In a recent press release, it said that it has started an 'independent' investigation of the issue but is still doing this by remaining in close contact with AMD and Gamers Nexus.
The motherboard and the CPU had apparent burns due to incorrect positioning of the CPU on the socket as pointed out by many, including Buildzoid. As per Buildzoid, the human error was probably due to trying to install the CPU vertically by ignoring the triangle mark, which resulted in the chipping of plastic from the socket and the CPU substrate in some places.
Nonetheless, the user has provided an update that he has sent both the CPU and motherboard to Gamers Nexus for detailed investigation. We are waiting eagerly to find out what exactly happened here and will keep you updated with updates from both GN and MSI.
