will take on the role Christian Bale made famous in. The Dune: Part Two star is set to portray Patrick Bateman in the upcoming film, which is said to be a new interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis’ novel of the same name which the 2000 movie is based on.
It was reported earlier this year that Lionsgate — which owns the film rights — plans to give a modern take on American Psycho. It aims to reimagine Patrick Bateman in the fast-paced modern era.
American Psycho centers on a young and handsome professional who leads a second life as a cold-blooded serial killer. Rumors about who’s taking on the mantle as the newest Patrick Bateman have emerged since the news about the adaptation came out, with Jacob Elordi considered as one of the actors who can potentially play the wealthy serial killer. It wasn’t until today that Variety reported that Butler has ultimately landed the iconic role.
Luca Guadagnino will direct the new adaptation of Ellis’ 1991 novel, while Scott Z. Burns (The Laundromat) will serve as the project’s writer. Guadagnino is known for his work in The Protagonists, Melissa P., I Am Love, A Bigger Splash, Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria, Bones and All, and Challengers. Guadagnino’s most recent project is the Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey-led romantic drama, Queer.
Meanwhile, Butler received worldwide prominence for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic Elvis. The actor, whose first roles were in Disney Channel and Nickelodeon shows, also starred in features and television shows like Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, The Intruders, The Bikeriders, The Dead Don’t Die, The Carrie Diaries, Yoga Hosers, The Shannara Chronicles, Dude, and Masters of the Air, among others.
Other details about Guadagnino’s version of American Psycho remain under wraps.
