NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 won't feature any character variations, but it thankfully will see the return of Brutalities.
Ever since Mortal Kombat 1 was first announced, it's raised a surprising amount of questions regarding its story, characters, and gameplay mechanics. While the whole timeline reset thing has been made a lot clearer with some of the recent trailers and gameplay footage, the focus on Kameos and the fate of returning mechanics have been left a little more vague.

Thankfully, after debuting its gameplay at Summer Game Fest just a few days ago, NetherRealm has been more open about how Mortal Kombat 1 plays and confirmed more specific details. Over on Twitter, the official Mortal Kombat account has been answering questions submitted by fans about how the game plays, revealing some features from past games that will and won't make a return.
Let's start off with the bad news first - character variations are no longer a thing. Mortal Kombat X introduced a feature where each character had three variations with a few specific moves for each form, which was expanded upon in Mortal Kombat 11 with a more customisable and open moveset. That's seemingly been removed altogether from Mortal Kombat 1, as the Twitter account confirmed that each character will have one moveset each.
The reasoning behind this is that the Kameo system has "replaced the variation mechanic", making it clear once again how important the new feature is to Mortal Kombat 1.
