Jeremy Renner's perfect Mission: Impossible 7 return has been set up thanks to the first Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One trailer. As hard as it is to imagine the Mission: Impossible movies without Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt, Paramount originally dreamed of a future where he was no longer around and Jeremy Renner was the franchise's new lead. Renner's debut as William Brandt in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol was meant to help establish this possible future, but the movie's success and Cruise's revitalized popularity meant Renner never took over and eventually was left out of Mission: Impossible — Fallout entirely.

Brandt's absence from Fallout was quite noticeable, though, and the mystery of what happened to him will only continue if he's also left out of Mission: Impossible 7 and its sequel.
