As hard as it is to imagine the Mission: Impossible movies without Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt, Paramount originally dreamed of a future where he was no longer around and Jeremy Renner was the franchise's new lead. Renner's debut as William Brandt in Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol was meant to help establish this possible future, but the movie's success and Cruise's revitalized popularity meant Renner never took over and eventually was left out of Mission: Impossible — Fallout entirely.
