Blizzard has discussed what will happen to unopened loot boxes and currencies players have accrued when Overwatch transitions to its sequel later this year.Overwatch 2 will launch in early access on October 4, 2022 as a free-to-play title. It will include a new seasonal structure featuring battle passes and, unlike the original game, it won’t include loot boxes.“When OW2 launches on Oct 4th it will be a replacement for the current Live Service,” Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller said in a Reddit AMA on Wednesday. One user asked what will happen to loot boxes and Overwatch’s existing currencies once the sequel arrives.“We’ll share a more detailed explanation on all of these topics before Overwatch 2 goes live in October,” said the franchise’s commercial lead, Jon Spector. “To give you a quick answer now though, those existing currencies (credits, OWL tokens, and competitive points) will come with you into Overwatch 2.“We are not transitioning loot boxes into Overwatch 2, and ahead of launch, any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened with your account receiving all the contents directly.”He added: “OW1 credits come with you to OW2, but our new virtual currency will be the main currency, and there will be things in OW2 that will not be purchasable with those OW1 credits”.Blizzard plans to offer Overwatch 2 seasonal updates every nine weeks, and battle passes featuring new heroes, game modes, maps and cosmetics.Players will also be able to acquire items through a new and “consistently updated” in-game shop.A new Overwatch 2 beta will launch on June 28 for PC and consoles, with sign-ups now open.Testers will get to play as new tank hero Junker Queen and experience a new map too.
