Minecraft is hardly realistic, with a world made up entirely of cubes. Even the mobs are made of blocks. But Warner Bros. and Mojang have teamed up to make a live-action movie, leading many to wonder what the hell it'll look like. Will Jack Black, AKA Steve, be a monstrous cube creature? Will it just be a bunch of dudes surviving in otherwise ordinary-looking woods?
Thankfully, some of the mystery has been answered today as set photos leaked online, showing hyperrealistic cube trees and grass.
We still don't know what the actors will look like, but it's clear that the surroundings won't be normal. It could be a Jumanji situation in which people have been sucked into the world of Minecraft, or it could just be a realistic rendition of the game. Whether that means Jason Momoa's face stretched across a giant block, we don't know yet.
According to IMDb, the film will follow the 'story' of the game as well. While Minecraft doesn't have a traditional narrative, given that it's an open survival sandbox, our ultimate goal is to venture to the End and fight the Ender Dragon, saving the Overworld. That's what we're gonna see in the Minecraft movie, albeit from the perspective of a young girl and her adventuring friends.
In the game, we start from scratch, gathering wood to build a crafting bench before we go mining to find diamonds which we use to build better tools and enchanting tables. With our gear, we set off to find the nearest Stronghold housing a portal to this otherworldly dimension and the dragon we've been tasked with slaying. Perhaps the movie will follow a similar structure, albeit with Jack Black punching the trees instead of us.
Very little is known right now, and we haven't seen anything official yet of the movie, but now that we have our first look at a behind-the-scenes prop, we know that it's attempting to stay faithful to Minecraft's signature, core aesthetic. God help us when we see the cast in action, then.
The best-selling video game of all time,
