The Minecraft Legends team published a new blog post announcing the end of the game’s development just nine months after it launched in April 2023.
According to the blog post, while the team is ending further development on the game, Minecraft Legends will remain playable, including existing Lost Legends challenges and their rewards, continued technical support, PvP and co-op.
The team also used the blog update to express gratitude to the game’s team, partners, and Minecraft community.
This is the second Minecraft spin off to shut down in recent months, as Mojang also announced the end of development for Minecraft Dungeons back in September 2023 even as the game crossed the 25 million player mark.
To Microsoft’s credit, despite the difficulties in finding success in Minecraft spinoffs, the original game continues to be a runaway success, with over 140 million monthly active users and 300 million copies sold, it remains the best selling game of all time.
Perhaps Microsoft and Mojang will find new success for Minecraft with the release of its upcoming Minecraft film, which stars Jason Momoa and may even see Jack Black play the iconic Steve.
