Minecraft developer Mojang will no longer use Reddit as a forum for feedback and community engagement, citing the major changes to rules and moderation that Reddit leadership is pushing through at the end of this month.
This means that the Minecraft subreddit will no longer be a go-to place to see changelogs, check the FAQs, and so on, with the team now directing users to visit feedback.minecraft.net or use one of their other social media channels.
Minecraft Java Tech Lead going by their online pseudonym ‘slicedlime’ explained:
As you have no doubt heard by now, Reddit management introduced changes recently that have led to rule and moderation changes across many subreddits. Because of these changes, we no longer feel that Reddit is an appropriate place to post official content or refer our players to.
We want to thank you for all the feedback and discussion you’ve participated in in past changelog threads. You are of course welcome to post unofficial update threads going forward, and if you want to reach the team with feedback about the game, please visit our feedback site at feedback.minecraft.net or contact us on one of our official social media channels.
The changes referred to are Reddit’s incoming fees for API usage by third parties, that will see major third party smartphone Reddit apps like Apollo, Reddit is Fun and other shutting down as free API access is closed – not because they weren’t willing to pay for API access, but because Reddit’s fees would have been astronomical and unmanageable. This has led to widespread protests across Reddit, as third party apps have provided enhanced access to moderator tools, accessibility options and more that the official Reddit app does not provide.
