Spiderhead, which premieres June 17 on Netflix, is a very different film from director Joseph Kosinski's most recent release, Top Gun: Maverick. But one thing they certainly have in common is boasting Miles Teller as a headliner. In Netflix's new sci-fi thriller, however, he plays a down-on-his-luck prisoner rather than a promising Navy pilot. Viewers join his character Jeff down a dark and winding path, where he's accompanied by costars Chris Hemsworth and Jurnee Smollett.
Based on George Saunders' short story “Escape from Spiderhead,” which was first published in the New Yorker in 2010, Spiderhead takes place in a mysterious prison facility that swaps metal bars for scientific experiments. Hemsworth plays Steve Abnesti, the charming head of operations who makes inmates feel at home until the requests he makes start to get too frightening. While Jeff deals with the added weight on his conscience after the experiments, the only light he finds in the darkness is fellow prisoner Lizzy (Smollett).

Screen Rant spoke to Teller about what keeps him returning to projects with director Joseph Kosinski, how he views the blossoming relationship between characters Jeff and Lizzy, and what draws him to various roles.
Screen Rant: It is very clear that you like working with Joe Kosinki, or this a very weird hostage situation. Can you talk about your collaboration process with him?
Miles Teller: Joe is just somebody that I have an immense amount of respect for. Visually, I think he's one of the top directors working right now. That always makes the job of the actor easier, I think. When you know the worlds are gonna be so entertaining, then it makes your job easier.
