Microsoft has confirmed that it’s no longer developing games that will run natively on Xbox One.
“We’ve moved on to Gen 9,” Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty told Axios, referring to Xbox Series X/S.
That doesn’t mean Microsoft is leaving the last generation behind, however.
While there won’t be native Xbox One versions of Series X/S games like Forza Motorsport, Xbox One players will be able to stream current-gen first-party titles such as Turn 10’s racer though Xbox Cloud Gaming included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
“That’s how we’re going to maintain support,” Booty said.
Booty has been doing a round of interviews over the past week coinciding with Sunday’s Xbox Games Showcase.
He also told Axios that that both game players and the industry in general need to realise that most big games now have development cycles of around half a decade.
But having aggressively grown its portfolio of first-party studios in recent years, Booty believes Xbox has “turned the corner” in its efforts to deliver at least four first-party games every year.
He has also claimed that upcoming RPG Starfield will have the fewest bugs of any Bethesda game.
