launches this year, though PC gamers can play the demo now for a limited time. Publisher Dotemu also shared an extended Metal Slugs Tactics gameplay video offering a deep dive into the upcoming turn-based tactical RPG.
The Metal Slug Tactics demo went live Monday as part of Steam Next Fest, an interactive showcase of upcoming PC games. The event runs from June 10 to June 17, giving players a bit over a week to try it out. While some developers keep their Next Fest demos up after the event ends, this is uncommon. Therefore, fans interested in trying the game early should consider doing so sooner rather than later.
Whether they intend to play the Metal Slug Tactics demo or not, fans can also check out its new gameplay deep dive. One interesting feature is how developer Leikir Studio attempts to translate Metal Slug’s running and gunning to turn-based tactics. Soldiers get a damage reduction when next to cover, but also after depleting their movement points for that turn. Cover still offers more protection than running, but cover can also be destroyed in battle. Each operative also has one action point per turn, and running and fighting also build up Adrenaline needed for special abilities.
The Metal Slug Tactics gameplay video also showcased the game’s Synch mechanic. When attacking an enemy, other operatives fire automatically if they have line of sight. Synchs are crucial to gameplay, with the video encouraging players to keep in mind when equipping and positioning their team.
However, one battle won’t win the war, and players will need to consider their strategy when choosing missions. Different missions offer different rewards, such as experience points, money, or the reinforcement coins players need to revive downed soldiers.
The Metal Slug Tactics demo is PC only, though the game will also launch on Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X this fall.
