Mary Jane Watson is expected to return in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 with another significant role, but developer Insomniac Games must find another way to utilize her during gameplay. The first Spider-Man game from Insomniac is widely celebrated and financially successful, but the most prominent critique of the game centers around its use of MJ. Her character is used compellingly from a narrative standpoint, but the gameplay sections she stars in are exceptionally boring compared to regular Spidey gameplay. After the changes Marvel's Spider-Man made to Mary Jane, it would be a shame to see her relegated to a background character, but it would also be a misstep for the sequel to continue using her in the same capacity.
Spider-Man introduced players to an older Peter Parker, letting the growing pains of becoming a web-slinger be told in the Miles Morales spin-off. Mary Jane is likewise in her 20s, working as an investigative journalist for the Daily Bugle. At the beginning of the game, Peter and MJ have fallen out of touch after being romantically involved. Their breakup stemmed from Peter becoming overprotective as his Spider-Man persona came into contact with increasingly dangerous supervillains. While the complicated relationship is fleshed out in Marvel's Spider-Man's world building, it takes center stage during stealth missions where players control MJ instead of Peter.
