Every kid who's ever dreamed of becoming a Marvel superhero is about to meet their kindred spirit in Kamala Khan when Ms. Marvel premieres June 8 on Disney+. The Pakistani-American teenager, played to wide-eyed perfection by newcomer Iman Vellani, is a comic book enthusiast who can't wait to cosplay at AvengerCon until the day she gains the powers to become an Avenger herself.
The New Jersey native is one of the newest superheroes in Marvel's Phase Four lineup, and she's having her small screen debut in Ms. Marvel before landing in the MCU proper for 2023's The Marvels. Series creator Bisha K. Ali has likened the tone of the show and its coming-of-age themes to Peter Parker's story in Jon Watt's Homecoming trilogy, but Kamala stands apart from her Marvel colleagues in plenty of ways.

You've been to the premiere at this point. People meet Chris Pratt and go, «My gosh, that's Star Lord.» Now people are meeting you and going, «My gosh, that's Ms. Marvel.»
Iman Vellani: Yeah, it's weird. I don't feel like I am the character. I still feel like I'm playing dress up, just on a bigger scale. I think that is a lot of the appeal of the character, very similar to Spider-Man. Anyone can be under the mask.
