Warning: SPOILERS for Moon Knight episode 2.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe hints there may have been a different Moon Knight before Phase 4 and Marc Spector's introduction. One of the ongoing themes of MCU Phase 4's stories is the idea of legacy. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier transformed Sam Wilson into the new Captain America, Hawkeye passed the sharpshooting mantle from Clint Barton to Kate Bishop, Black Widow set up Yelena Belova to take over for Natasha Romanoff, and Spider-Man: No Way Home united three generations of Spideys. Moon Knight episode 2 dives deeper into the complicated dynamic between Steven Grant, Marc Spector, and Khonshu, including the idea that Marc is Khonshu's avatar. It is only because of this connection that Marc has the special abilities granted by Khonshu, including the spectacular costume and healing abilities that help make him Moon Knight. The MCU has yet to reveal exactly why Khonshu chose Marc Spector to be his avatar, but Moon Knight episode 2 does reveal that he isn't the first. As a result, there is reason to believe that a different version of Moon Knight existed in the MCU before Phase 4.
