Both Marvel Comics and DC Comics are bitter rivals today, but the two comics giants' first attempt at at collaboration ended in an cancelled crossover that would have seen Superman transformed into an inconsiderate jerk. The Man of Steel is known by DC fans (and Marvel fans as well) as a superhero who saves everyone, regardless of their species or place of origin (and even if they're villains; Superman has vowed never to kill). But the ill-fated first attempt at what would eventually become Marvel vs. DC contained Superman opposing Galactus in a way that would make any fan of Clark Kent question his true motives.
The very first collaboration between the two companies took place in Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man, published in 1976. The crossover between Superman and Spider-Man was successful enough to spearhead additional books, and 1981 would see the release of DC Special Series #27, in which Batman fought and eventually teamed up with the Incredible Hulk. The decision was eventually made to create a book in which the Justice League of America would meet the Avengers — but unfortunately, the first draft ended in disaster.

The initial JLA/Avengers crossover, scheduled to be published in 1983, was hit with plenty of delays thanks to the initial plot's rejection by the editors. The story would involve Kang the Conqueror, the Time Lord, and a fair amount of time travel.
