Mario Fans Are Worried Nintendo Might Have Recast Charles Martinet
Nintendo announced its lineup of titles for the rest of 2023 during the latest Nintendo Direct, in which a new 2D Mario game called Super Mario Bros. Wonder was revealed. It looks like a pretty fun time, and even includes Princess Daisy's mainline title debut, but there's one nagging feeling that some Mario fans can't help but shake - the fact that Mario sounds a little bit different from his recent outings.
Immediately after the trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder aired, some very worried Mario fans immediately took to Twitter to voice their concern over Mario's slightly different voice (thanks Kotaku). The main worry is that Nintendo may have unceremoniously recast beloved longtime series voice actor Charles Martinet, as certain words and phrases spoken by Mario in the trailer sound a little different to Martinet's more recent performances.

One of the most concerning moments is when Mario transforms into an elephant and says "Wowie, zowie!" towards the end of the trailer, with his accent sounding a lot deeper than usual. Another moment is from the Japanese Nintendo Direct trailer in which Mario shouts "Wonderful!" when grabbing the Wonder Flower to make the world all wibbly wobbly. Even simple phrases like Mario's usual exclamations while jumping caught some fans off-guard.
A lot of people are arguing that Nintendo could have simply recorded some new voice lines for Mario with Martinet, and this is just the voice we're getting now that he's a bit older.
