The announcement of Super Mario Bros. Wonder was arguably the biggest highlight of the most recent Nintendo Direct, a new 2D entry that features a bunch of new gimmicks including Mario's ability to turn into an elephant. However, it wasn't the new abilities or the playable debut of Daisy that got Mario fans cheering though, it was the game's art direction that suggests that Nintendo may have finally ditched the "New" art style after all of these years.
Shortly after the trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder aired, fans of the series flocked to social media to share their thoughts on the game's new and improved art direction, celebrating the death of the New Super Mario Bros. art style that Nintendo has used for Mario's 2D outing since 2006. In particular, Mario's slightly altered design is going down a treat with the majority of people, with lots comparing it to concept art created for older Mario titles like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros. 2.

It's definitely the shake up that the 2D Mario series needed after so many games with that fairly bland "New" art style that fans were beginning to despise. It's not the most dramatic of changes, but little touches such as Mario news run cycle and facial expressions give our favorite Italian plumber a little more personality when there was barely any before. Couple that with all of the interesting new gimmicks seen in the trailer, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is looking like a quality 2D title that fans have been begging for for a while now.
