PS5 sales are now trending ahead of the PS4 in the USA when time aligned, demonstrating an incredible strategy from Sony following the initial launch period which was heavily supply constrained. The Japanese giant has flooded the market with hardware since the tail of last year, and it continues to be snapped up by hungry consumers, eager to get a taste of the new-gen console and its expanding library of games.
Unsurprisingly, the PS5 was the best-selling console in the USA in March 2023, and it helped lift hardware spending for the entire category. However, this was offset by a decline in content spending, which meant the industry as a whole slumped by five per cent year-over-year, totalling $4.6 billion in overall revenue.
Resident Evil 4 was the best-selling game for March 2023, although San Diego Studio’s MLB The Show 23 also enjoyed a strong start, finishing in third position – even with Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch digital sales excluded. Hogwarts Legacy continued to perform well in second, while The Last of Us: Part I continued its steady performance in fifth, following on from the enormous success of HBO’s adaptation.
