Since their debut in Dominaria, Sagas have quickly become one of the Magic the Gathering community's favourite new mechanics. More than just giving you a new effect each turn, Sagas tell stories about the game and its world that really resonated with players.

With Sagas rumoured to be coming back in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty for the fifth time, here is everything you need to know about these unique enchantments and how to best use them.
Sagas are a subtype of enchantments that use Lore counters to enable a new effect each turn. They can be identified by their unique frame, which runs the art vertically down one side of the card and the Saga's chapters on the other.
When a Saga enters the battlefield, you immediately put its first Lore counter on it and trigger the first Chapter ability, the series of triggered abilities running down the side of the card. Then, after your draw step every turn, you put another counter on it and carry out the second part. Each turn, add another Lore counter until you've done each stage of the card. Once you've done that last effect, the Saga sacrifices itself.
For example, say you play a Waking the Trolls. When it enters the battlefield, you put the first Lore counter on it, which triggers the first Chapter ability to destroy a target land. On your next upkeep, you put another Lore counter on it, and that triggers the second Chapter ability, letting you put a land card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. You put the third and final Lore counter on the next upkeep and do the third Chapter ability: making lots of 4/4 Troll warrior tokens. Once that is done, Waking the Trolls is sacrificed and goes to your graveyard.
