A surprise update to Ocarina Of Time on the Nintendo Switch could mean Nintendo is looking to improve the quality of N64 emulation.
While there was a lot of demand to add Nintendo 64 games to the Nintendo Switch’s online service, Nintendo’s handling of it was poorly received by fans. Aside from gating them behind a more expensive tier, complaints of poor frame rates, input lag, and other issues quickly emerged.
Nintendo is usually the one company that can be relied upon to have a minimum of bugs in their games but despite launching three months ago the only thing they’ve done since then is fix one minor bug in Zelda: Ocarina Of Time.
As noted by dataminer OatmealDome, the room where you fight Dark Link in the Water Temple has been fixed slightly. Originally, the emulated version failed to render reflections in the water, much to the chagrin of players since the reflection is meant to vanish to herald Dark Link’s appearance, and then come back once he’s defeated.
This neat story moment is back again, thanks to a fix, but the fog from the original game is still missing. In a statement to Kotaku, OatmealDome adds that other issues persist as well.
‘In terms of the Water Temple room, the water now has some translucency and renders reflections correctly, so it doesn’t look as ugly as before. However, there is a scrolling water texture layer which is much less subtle on the Switch when you compare it to N64/GameCube/Wii/Wii U, so it isn’t quite right yet.
‘Fog is still absent as well – in this room, there is supposed to be some atmospheric distance fog which just isn’t present in the Switch version. This also applies to the entire game, so areas like Kokiri Forest are also still affected.’
Issues related to other games remain present
