There are multiple skills that players can unlock for main character Sakamoto Ryoma in , with the best ones to get first scattered across four distinct fighting styles. As players progress through the main story, they have the opportunity to earn new attacks from these styles to have better options against difficult enemies found later in the game. The skills chosen early set a foundation for players when starting their adventure in the streets of Edo, helping players decide which style works best for them.
The four combat styles available to Ryoma are Brawler, Swordsman, Gunman, and Wild Dancer. The Brawler style heavily resembles the combat seen in the series, with fierce melee strikes and martial arts being the core source of damage to enemies of the player. The far more straightforward Swordsman and Gunman styles utilize Ryoma's katana and revolver, dealing slow but powerful melee strikes or effective long-range attacks respectfully. Finally, the Wild Dancer style combines the previous two with precise strikes and sweeping combos that help clear areas around the player.
