Leveling up in can be a somewhat time-consuming task, but a little bit of streamlining can go a long way. As an RPG based on the system, employs its tabletop counterpart's leveling system, which puts a lot of choices in the hands of players. Martial classes in particular might not be making huge overhauls at every level, but increasing in power often involves the selection of spells, feats, and abilities rather than simply ticking health and damage up a notch.
Every member of a party tends to level up at the same time, as those who stay behind in camp receive the same amount of XP as those engaged directly in combat. Occasional instances can grant a small boost of XP to specific party members, but these are minor and infrequent enough to rarely offset leveling in any real way. This system is extremely helpful for party management, making it so that characters can be swapped around freely without worries about how they'll be leveled, but it can also make leveling a somewhat slow and involved process that requires clicking through every character in turn.

The big change to leveling in comes courtesy of Patch 3, revealed in notes documenting the highlights of the patch posted by developer Larian Studios on Steam. Rather than requiring each character to be selected in turn, now queues them automatically for leveling, moving from one character screen to the next as the process is completed. This may sound like a minor alteration overall, but considering the number of recruitable characters and the length of the game, it does a lot to smooth over a general sore point.
