Just days after its announcement, LEGO Fortnite is out now, coming with a pretty fantastic looking launch trailer, stuffed with gameplay.
There’s certainly some roots back to Fortnite’s original game mode, Fortnite: Save the World, but Lego Fortnite is almost certainly aiming to be a real challenger to Minecraft. There’s an emphasis on creative crafting, battling a variety of enemies (surviving the nighttime), and playing in co-op for up to eight players.
You’ll have a Lego avatar – over 1200 Fortnite skins have been recreated in a Lego style – and all of the construction will look like Lego blocks and creations. The trailer shows off some impressive forts and settlements, as well as how you can recruit villagers to gather materials for you and run farms while you go off adventuring. The tone will get darker at night as skeletons pop out of the ground and angry wolves attack you and your buildings.
This is more than just a temporary game mode or reskin for Epic Games’ cashcow. Fortnite: Battle Royale will remain one of the biggest money-makers in gaming, as it undergoes its latest reinvention with a new season of content, but Epic’s ambitions are in trying to build out a “metaverse” of gaming content. Lego Fortnite will simply exist within Fortnite, and it will do so alongside a new racing game mode, Rocket Racing, and a new digital music venue, Fortnite Festival, both of which are launching through the second half of this week.
