In The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey, Ptolemy hallucinates about his uncle and father figure Coydog telling him that he needs to remember something important, which serves as one of the series' biggest mysteries. However, whatever Coydog needs Ptolemy to remember has already been revealed in the novel on which the Apple TV+ series was based upon. Indeed, just like many recent shows and movies, The Last of Ptolemy Grey is based on a book of the same name. That said, unlike most other series adaptations of popular books and other literature, Apple TV+'s The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey has a screenplay that was developed by the original novel's writer, crime fiction novelist Walter Mosley. This means that the series is loyal to the book, and that the book already spoils whatever Coydog needs Ptolemy to remember.
Coydog was the man who taught Ptolemy everything he knows. Coydog appears in Ptolemy's dementia-driven hallucinations and flashbacks, and although Ptolemy is always happy to see Coydog, their interactions are not always friendly.
